Surface Treatment Of Stainless Steel Plate

Pickling

Pickling is performed to remove any high-temperature scaling or a result of handling that might have occurred during the annealing process. It is done through immersion in a passivating acid solution. This step also assists in further cleaning and preparation of the metal for the next phases of the production process.

Passivation

After pickling, the plates are passivated to remove any free iron and other contaminants left behind. This ensures the stainless 316 plates offer optimum corrosion resistance. Passivation can be achieved through immersion in a nitric acid solution, electrochemical treatment, or a citric acid method, depending on the facility’s preferences and environmental regulations.

Electro-Polishing

In cases where an ultra-smooth, near-mirror finish is required, electro-polishing may be employed. This process uses a combination of electricity and an electrolyte to remove a thin layer of metal, which results in a surface that is not only brilliantly polished but also clean on a microscopic level, enhancing the stainless properties.

 

Processing of Stainless Steel Plate

 
 

Raw material preparation: The main raw materials of stainless steel plates are steel, chromium, nickel and other metals. First, select appropriate raw materials and mix them according to different requirements and specifications.

 
 

Smelting: Put the raw materials into a large furnace and heat them to high temperatures to melt them. Through smelting, the composition of stainless steel can be adjusted and controlled to ensure product quality and performance.

 
 

Continuous casting: Pour the molten stainless steel into the continuous casting machine, and quickly solidify it into a billet through the crystallizer and cooling water. Continuous casting machines can produce steel billets of different specifications and sizes.

 
 

Hot rolling: The steel billet is fed into the hot rolling mill and rolled and stretched multiple times to gradually thin it and form the required thickness and width. During the hot rolling process, stainless steel plates undergo deformation under high temperatures and pressures to achieve the required mechanical properties.

 
 

Pickling: The hot-rolled stainless steel plate has some scale and impurities and needs to be cleaned by pickling. The stainless steel plate is immersed in the acid solution to remove oxides and impurities on the surface while increasing the brightness of the stainless steel plate.

 
 

Cold rolling: The pickled stainless steel plate enters the cold rolling mill. Through multiple rolling and stretching, the thickness of the stainless steel plate is further reduced and its surface quality and flatness are improved.

 
 

Annealing: The cold-rolled stainless steel plate will generate a certain amount of stress and needs to be annealed. The stainless steel plate is heated to a high temperature and then slowly cooled. During the annealing process, the grain boundaries of the stainless steel plate are recrystallized, eliminating stress and improving tensile strength and plasticity.

 
 

Surface treatment: According to different needs, the stainless steel plate is subjected to surface treatment, such as polishing, pickling, coating, etc., to increase the aesthetics and corrosion resistance of the stainless steel plate.

 
 

Cutting and flattening: Cut and flatten the stainless steel plate according to the size required by the customer to obtain the final product.

 
 

Inspection and packaging: Carry out quality inspection on stainless steel plates to ensure that they meet relevant standards and requirements. The finished product is then packaged for shipping and storage.
